Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a technique that utilizes a small camera to examine the inside of the uterus, also known as the womb. It is used to treat and cure uterine problems. You can be better prepared if you know more about what happens during a hysteroscopy.

What is the purpose of a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy may be required to investigate issues such as heavy periods, fibroids, polyps, abnormal bleeding, or infertility. Some uterine conditions can be treated with hysteroscopy.

How to Get Ready for a Hysteroscopy?

You should fast (not eat or drink anything) for at least 6 hours before your procedure. Your doctor will be able to tell you whether or not you should take your regular medications on the day of your procedure. An hour before the procedure, you may be asked to take pain relievers.

And you should ask questions both before you agree to have the surgery and during the procedure.

What to Expect Following a Hysteroscopy?

You will be supervised while any anaesthetic wears off after a hysteroscopy. You might require pain relief. You can usually go home the same day.

You should not do the following for 24 hours after hysteroscopy:

  • Operate or drive heavy machinery
  • Do any strenuous work or exercise

If you experience any bleeding after the procedure, you should use sanitary pads rather than tampons. Avoid sexual activity for at least 48 hours after any bleeding has stopped.

This is a very safe procedure in most cases. Most women experience period-like bleeding for 2 to 7 days after the procedure. There may be some discomfort, similar to menstrual cramps or pain. You should see a doctor if you have a fever, severe pain, unusual vaginal discharge, or heavy bleeding.
